UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE:
The Unemployment Offices are closed to walk-in and in-person services, however, weekly claims can be submitted online at: https://huiclaims.hawaii.gov/#/. Online filing times are 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday; or 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Everyone is strongly encouraged to file online for quicker service. Here’s the process:
- Go to https://huiclaims.hawaii.gov/#/ and click on the right green button that says “Claimant Services,” that will prompt you to create a user account.
- Set up your profile and be sure to answer each question correctly as it’s difficult to go back and make changes/edits.
- Once you get a confirmation number, then you can proceed to do weekly certified filings.
There are also two phone numbers available for those wishing to reset their password or make an appointment for over-the-phone applications: (808) 762-5751 to reset passwords and (808) 762-5752 to set up a phone appointment*. These numbers are available during normal business hours of 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
*Note: Phone appointments are for those who absolutely do not have access to a computer and cannot file online, and/or have limited English proficiency. This number will set up a phone appointment to start your application, and currently, phone appointments are well into May.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE OF THE PACIFIC:
Employee Assistance of the Pacific (EAP) is a free, confidential resource for the Kyo-ya ‘Ohana. EAP is easily accessible via phone or video and can provide you information on legal, financial and healthcare navigation. Log onto: www.EAPacific.com or www.eapacific.com/corona.
ALOHA UNITED WAY 211:
Aloha United Way 211 is Hawai‘i’s only comprehensive, statewide community information and referral service. Free and confidential.
211 specialists help you find food, shelter, financial assistance, child care, parenting support, elderly care, disability services, job training and much more.
Connect with an Information and Referral Specialist by phone, text, chat, or email, Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., or search AUW’s database online 24/7 at https://www.auw211.org/.
FREE GRAB-AND-GO KEIKI BREAKFAST AND LUNCH:
During the extended school closure, the Hawai‘i Department of Education is providing student grab-and-go breakfast and lunch at select schools to children 18 years and under. Children must be present at pick up. For a list of locations statewide and more information, click below:

YMCA’S ESSENTIAL WORKERS CHILDCARE PROGRAM:
The Y recently announced that people interested in its Essential Workers Childcare Program can receive financial assistance for their children in grades kindergarten through 5. The program is available at the Nuuanu, Leeward and Windward YMCAs Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The program cares for children of essential workers, including hotels, restaurants, healthcare, military, construction, grocery, hardware, supply stores, among others. See more information at www.ymcahonolulu.org/about/news/essential-workers-child-care
NATIONAL RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION’S RESTAURANT EMPLOYEE RELIEF FUND:
The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s Restaurant Employee Relief Fund is open for new applications. Here’s the site for more information: https://rerf.us/apply-for-aid
Helping the Community:
In conjunction with the City & County of Honolulu, Department of Health and the Hawaii Homeless Healthcare HUI, Unite HERE Local 5 helped open a Temporary Quarantine Center on April 1. The facility is for those without homes who have tested positive for COVID-19. Kyo-ya made donations of gently used linens and pillows. In addition, equipment from Kyo-ya was borrowed to help with the facility’s opening such as pressure washers, hoses and wet vacuums.
After the initial donations, Kyo-ya contributed more lightly used linens and pillows along with some perishable food items as we ramped down our hotel operations. Kyo-ya also donated used TVs for the Center’s recreation room.
Human Resources teams from the Kyo-ya ‘Ohana joined other human resources professionals within the industry to deliver many sweet treats to the State Unemployment Office on Monday, April 13. Among those participating were Kyo-ya SHARE Trainees Yusuke Yoshida, Yoshi Kinuya, and Valerie Okawa from Human Resources. Click here to see additional photos.
